Program Specifications

Higher Specialization in Internal Medicine / Study Plan

  • Goals and Objectives:

    1.   Pass the Basic and Advanced Life Support course

    2.   Demonstrate the ability to perform a comprehensive history and physical examination as well as the ability to focus and adjust the history and physical based on each patient’s severity of illness, level of comfort, and ability to communicate

    3.   Establish the approach to commonly observed in-patient problems, e.g., pain, acute shortness of breath, fever, palpitations, chest pain, hypotension, falls, acute changes in mental status, and assess to transfer to the critical care unit

    4.   Demonstrate proficiency in the use and interpretation of standard laboratory tests and X-rays

    5.   Demonstrate the ability to manage and follow up on chronic medical illnesses

    6.   Implement the management of common diseases seen in in-patients, based on evidence-based medicine with least cost

    7.   Demonstrate the ability to write notes that accurately and completely reflect the patient’s condition and to write complete medical reports for patients

    8.   Demonstrate the ability to transfer patients to appropriate medical services and implement appropriate discharge plan

    9.   Demonstrate the ability to use and interpret specific investigations such as Arterial Blood Gases (ABG), pulmonary function tests, Electrocardiograms and advanced radiological images

    10. Perform standard invasive procedures skillfully and safely, such as lumber puncture, arterial puncture, thoracentesis, arthrocentesis, paracentesis, central venous line insertion, nasogastric tube insertion, intubation, electrical shock, and to know the indications, contraindications, risks, benefits, and alternatives to these procedures.

    11. Know how to use information technology to supplement their medical knowledge through medical journals and medical conferences

    12. Communicate Effectively patient information to colleagues, consultants, and other members of the health and consider patient safety

    13. Understand the departmental and institutional performance improvement projects and patient safety goals that achieve Joint Commission International standards.

    14. Utilize Consistently infection control strategies, e.g., hand hygiene, and safe use of needles and other sharps

    15. Expand and reinforce the ability to publish a research paper in a scientific journal accredited by the University of Jordan.

    16. Prepare residents to be eligible for both the Arab and Jordanian internal medicine board exams

    Ability to perform a comprehensive history taking and physical examination, understand the approach to commonly observed in-patient problems, and ability to participate in treatment plan

    Description:

    1.    First-year residents are supervised by 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-year residents and the attending physician. His responsibilities are:

    2.    Attend and participate in the daily activities

    3.    Participate in one of the medical teams, fill out the admission database, present the case to the supervising attending the day following admission, write all orders, write daily progress notes, coordinate the patient's care, and write a discharge summary at the end of hospitalization.

    4.    Prepare the clinical notes and present the cases to the attending physician during the morning round

    5.    Participate in scheduled education activities ( flea market, case presentations, and house staff)

    6.    Participate in one of the research projects with one of the attending physicians

    7.    Attend an Advance Trauma Life Support course (ACLS)

    8.    Cover the night and weekend calls as scheduled

    9.    Cover the emergency department in the last three months of the first year

    10.  9. Achieve satisfactory evaluation and pass both the written and clinical first-year exam

    12 months

    Second

    Ability to lead medical teams and complete training in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU), Medical Intensive Care Unit (CCU), and emergency department (ED)

    Description:

    1.    Second-year residents are supervised by 3rd and 4th-year residents, fellows, and attending physicians. Responsibilities include:

    2.    Perform procedures skillfully and safely and achieve the goals that match the second-year level

    3.    Participate or lead one of the medical teams

    4.    Supervise medical students, interns, and first year residents in the medical team

    5.    Complete training in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)

    6.    Participate in one of the research projects with one of the attending physicians

    7.    Complete training in the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) and lead the CPR team

    8.    Cover the internal medicine division in the emergency department according to the schedule and deal with emergency cases under senior residents and attending physicians

    9.    Participate in scheduled education activities ( flea market, case presentations, and house staff)

    10. Complete training in different internal medicine subspecialties according to the schedule

    11. Achieve satisfactory evaluation and pass both the written and clinical second-year exams

    12. 11. Perform common invasive procedures skillfully and safely under supervision

    12 months

    Third

    Ability to manage outpatient clinics and perform good consultation notes with appropriate management plan in a major subspecialty   

    Description:

    1.    Third-year residents are supervised by 4th year residents and the attending physicians. His responsibilities are:

    2.    Perform procedures skillfully and safely and achieve the goals that match the third-year level under supervision

    3.    Lead one of the medical teams, which includes medical students, interns and first-year residents

    4.    Participate in scheduled education activities

    5.    Complete training in the out-patient department and cover subspecialty clinics under supervision

    6.    Complete training in consults services and suggest treatment plan under supervision

    7.    Complete training in different internal medicine subspecialties according to the schedule

    8.    Participate in the teaching process for medical students, interns, first-year and second-year residents

    9.    Participate in one of the research projects with one of the attending physicians

    10. Cover the night and weekend calls as scheduled

    11. Achieve satisfactory evaluation and pass both the written and clinical third-year exams

     

    12 months

    Fourth

    Ability to provide medical care for complicated cases and look after intensive care patients with a higher level of independence, leading to qualification as a qualified specialist

     

    Description:

    1.    Fourth-year residents are supervised by fellows and attending physicians. Responsibilities include:

    1.    Achieve the goals that match the fourth-year residents' level under supervision

    2.    Participate in scheduled education activities (flea market, grand round)

    3.    Ability to choose an elective training in other subspecialties in Jordan University Hospital (dermatology and psychiatry), or abroad elective training

    4.    Participate in one of the research projects with one of the attending physicians

    5.    Supervise six medical students and internal medicine residents

    6.    Achieve satisfactory evaluation and pass both the written and clinical fourth-year exams

    7.    Perform common invasive procedures skillfully and safely with a higher level of independence, leading to qualification as a qualified specialist

    8.    Qualify residents to pass the internal medicine board exam ( Jordanian and Arab board exams)

    9.       N.B.: Head of the department and program director selects one of the fourth-year residents as the chief medical resident who is responsible for arranging the resident's rotations schedules, call schedules and supervising their performance

    The training program is designed to provide training in all major internal medicine department subspecialties during four years of residency. Each rotation is one to two months.  Major Internal medicine subspecialty:

    -         Coronary Care Unit CCU

    -         Medical intensive care unit MICU

    -         Cardiology

    -         Respiratory

    -         Gastroenterology

    -         Hematology

    -         Endocrinology

    -         Neurology

    -         Nephrology

    -         Infectious

    -         Rheumatology

    -         Other subspecialty

    -         Dermatology
