Higher Specialization in Forensic Medicine / Program Overview

  • Background to the program and subject area:

-        The residency program offers training that enables the enrolled resident to develop knowledge and skills in Forensic Medicine. Training in the first year is conducted under consultants’ supervision, where the resident should recognize medico-legal cases and deal with them in Forensic Medicine Clinics perform autopsy, sample and sampling procedures for medico-legal cases. In addition, the resident is expected to participate as a Forensic Physician in crime scenes or death scene and to p articipate in on-calls of forensic Medicine duties and to recognize medico-legal cases in emergency room and to write medico-legal reports. In the second year, the resident should perform gross and microscopic examination for histopathology samples, particularly general pathology and cardiovascular system and to prepare slides for microscopic examinations. Also, the resident is expected to participate in writing histopathology reports, and to participate and attend Division of Pathology seminars. In the third and fourth years, the resident should recognize medico-legal cases and deal with them in Forensic Medicine Clinics and in the Emergency Department. In addition, the resident is expected to perform autopsy for medico-legal cases and to write reports for them. Moreover, the resident should respond to consultations for medico-legal cases within the hospital and to conduct expert witness in the courts of law and to participate as a Forensic Physician in crime scenes. Also, the resident should participate and attend toxicology seminars concentrating on commonly encountered poisons, such as drugs, substance of abuse, pesticides, occupational poisons, heavy metals and others. The residency program also offers the opportunity for resident training on research methodology and writing proposal for scientific research, to collect data and to write manuscripts for the scientific research and submitting it to a recognized scientific journal by the University of Jordan.
