Pediatrics Specialty Care:
In addition to primary care pediatrics, the following specialty care is provided
Neonatal intensive care: the first unit was established in 1975. Currently, a State of the art unit, renovated in 2013, provides care for the premature babies and the ill neonates. Services provided include, and not limited to, noninvasive and invasive respiratory support, pre-operative and post-operative management of congenital anomalies, management of medical neonatal conditions such as sepsis, metabolic disorders, cardiac anomalies, pulmonary hypertension, and many other conditions. The unit is attached optimally to the delivery room and to the busy obstetric floors. Outpatients follow up services are also provided for premature infants, during which developmental assessment, nutritional assessment and care for chronic lung disease and other complications of prematurity are done.
Pediatric infectious disease: The infectious disease service at the University of Jordan in its capacity as the oldest such service in the country is also actively engaged in consulting with the ministry of health through membership of appropriate committees on outbreak control, immunization and poliomyelitis eradication. Infection control is also provided by the infectious disease service at the department in collaboration with the infection control unit. Patients are admitted to the infectious disease service on the inpatient wards as appropriate and proper isolation measures are recommended. In addition the infectious disease service also provides consultation for inpatient and outpatient pediatric patients, including monitoring for appropriate use of antibiotics, antibiotic stewardship, and tracking of antibiotic drug levels and dosing of drugs as well as drug adverse events.
Pediatric neurology: Care provided includes diagnosis and management of seizure disorders, structural brain anomalies, neuromuscular disorders, developmental delay, and metabolic disorders. Procedures performed include Electro-encephalography (EEG), Video EEG, electromyography, nerve conduction studies, muscle biopsies, vagal nerve stimulation and epilepsy surgeries. The unit of pediatric neurology sciences was established in 1992.
Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition: The section provides services for all pediatric patients presenting with various symptoms, from the common ones (stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation), to the more complicated ones (gastrointestinal bleeding and pediatric liver disorders). Nutrition evaluation is another key service provided to those whom are underweight, overweight, or in need to be on a specific diet. These services are provided through the outpatient clinic, the inpatient team, and the consultation coverage for all hospitalized children, including those at the intensive care units. Procedures performed by our section members include upper and lower endoscopies, removal of foreign bodies and polyps, banding of esophageal varies , dilation of narrowed esophagus , capsule endoscopy, double balloon enteroscopy, ERCP , and liver biopsies. We are the only center in the country that performs impedance pH studies (pH monitoring for both acidic and no acidic reflux). The section enjoys an excellent collaborative relation with pediatric surgery, anesthesia, pathology, and interventional and diagnostic radiology sections at our facility, as well as joint services and educational activities with our adult Gastroenterology colleagues.
Pediatric nephrology: Care provided includes diagnosis and management of children with renal diseases as children with congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract, recurrent urinary tract infections, nephrotic syndrome, overactive bladder and acute and chronic renal impairment. Ultrasound, voiding cystourethrogram , nuclear imaging ,bladder urodynamic studies are available for diagnosis. Procedures performed include renal biopsies, peritoneal and hemo-dialysis. The dialysis unit was established in 1989.
Pediatric cardiology: Care provided includes non-invasive cardiac imaging including echocardiography, fetal echocardiography, computed topography, as well as cardiac MRI in selected cases; Invasive procedures for children, infants and neonates that include both interventional and diagnostic catheterization; Arrhythmia care including Holter monitoring, exercise testing, and ablation procedures in collaboration with division of adult cardiology.
Pediatric endocrinology and diabetes: Care provided includes diagnosis and management for children with diabetes mellitus as well as all other endocrine disorders such as growth and puberty disorders, thyroid diseases, adrenal diseases, bone metabolism and disorders of sex development. Detailed endocrine workup is done through stimulation tests done in a dedicated day program.
Pediatric Intensive care: A fully monitored unit in the pediatric floor provides care for the very ill children requiring intensive monitoring and management. Services provided include, and not limited to, noninvasive and invasive respiratory support, management of medical conditions as sepsis, metabolic disorders, organ failure, neurological disorders, and many other conditions. The unit was established in 2001, and underwent many developments and additions since that time.
Pediatric pulmonology, allergy and immunology: Care is provided for children with Cystic fibrosis ( CF), Asthma, and chronic lung disease. Sweat chloride testing and gene mutation analysis for CF is performed at our labs
