Program Specifications

Higher Specialization in Neurosurgery / Program Intended Learning Outcomes

It is expected that the program will provide opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, skills and other properties in the following fields:

By the end of training, a resident should be able to do the following:

1. Apply and integrate knowledge of basic medical sciences and evidence-based practice in clinical problem solving in neurosurgery.

2. Interpret accurately findings from history and physical examination to recognize the presentation/s and construct a differential diagnosis for common neurosurgical complaints.

3. Select and interpret accurately the results, outcomes of the most appropriate, and cost-effective diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic procedures for each neurosurgical problem taking into consideration the nature of the clinical situation and the risks, benefits to the patient.

4. Master essential surgical techniques and demonstrate professional skills in preoperative, operative, and postoperative management of neurosurgical diseases for adults and children.

5. Handle tissue and use surgical instruments professionally and apply guidelines of infection control while performing routine diagnostic and surgical procedures and operations.

6. Recognize and manage effectively emergency situations, including surgical emergencies, head and spinal injuries and critical patients, and deal with critical patients and their relatives in a professional and dignified way.

7. Demonstrate effective, appropriate, and timely consultation of other health professionals as needed for optimal patient care.

8. Maintain complete, detailed and accurate medical records and utilize information technology to manage information, access on-line medical information, and support own education and proper patient care. 

9. Recognize ethical principles that govern decision-making in surgical practice and implement the professional ethical attitude with patients and their relatives including respect of patient's confidentiality and consent and delivery of care in an honest, considerate and compassionate manner.

10. Utilize different scientific methodologies to conduct and publish scientific research studies and present the results professionally.

11. Demonstrate effective communication with the health-care team and develop team-working and leadership skills necessary to organize work and supervise and educate junior and paramedical staff and show a commitment to continuous professional development.
