Program Specifications

Higher Specialization in Dermatology and Venereology / Study Plan

The end of each academic year trainees are expected to acquire the following learning objectives:

Year 1

        To complete a 1-year general medicine rotation to include rheumatology and to meet the requirements expected of first year medical residents.

        To engage in dermatology research projects where possible.

Year 2

        To be competent in obtaining a comprehensive history and performing a thorough physical examination relevant to dermatology.

        To develop professional values and ethical behaviours.

        To develop effective communication with patients and their families.

        To become familiar with the more common skin condition including eczema, psoriasis, acne and urticaria, as well as to formulate a basic management plan for the common skin conditions.

        To become familiar with the dermatological emergencies.

        To be aware of the basic laboratory, histopathological and radiological investigations for the common dermatological problems.

        To learn the basic introductory principles of dermatopathology.

        To be aware of the various available therapeutic modalities such as photo-, biologic and laser therapies.

        To present cases in clinic to more senior colleagues and consultants.

        To perform- after a period of observation- simple diagnostic biopsies under supervision such as punch biopsies.

        To review oncall patients and referrals accompanied by senior colleagues or consultants.

        To learn the principles of clinical research, evidence based medicine and continuing professional development. Trainees are encouraged to present and publish clinical work during this period.

Year 3

To be able to diagnose and manage common skin conditions independently and formulate a comprehensive management plan.

To become familiar with the less common skin diseases and their treatment options.

To develop some knowledge in the management of recalcitrant cases.

To be able to diagnose dermatological emergencies and formulate a preliminary treatment plan.

To develop professional values and ethical behaviours.

To develop effective communication with patients and their families.

To be able to assess the need for relevant laboratory, histopathological and radiological investigations for patients with the more common dermatological problems.

To learn the basic principles of dermatopathology of the more common skin diseases.

To learn the principals and indications for the various therapeutic modalities such as photo, biologic and laser therapies.

To be able to perform simple diagnostic biopsies independently and simple excisional biopsies under supervision.

To be able to review on call and referral patients and formulate a preliminary diagnosis and treatment plan.

To be prepared to sit for Part 1 of the Jordanian Dermatology Board Exam.

To learn the principles of clinical research, evidence based medicine and continuing professional development. Trainees are encouraged to present and publish clinical work during this period.

Year 4

To be able to diagnosis less common skin diseases and formulate a comprehensive treatment plan.

To be able to formulate a management plan for more recalcitrant conditions beyond first and second line management.

To be able to diagnose dermatological emergencies and formulate a safe and applicable treatment plan.

To consolidate professional values and ethical behaviours.

To be able to communicate effectively with patients and their families.

To be able to assess the need for relevant laboratory, histopathological and radiological investigations for patients with the less common dermatological problems.

To learn the basic principles of dermatopathology of the less common skin diseases.

To confidently understand the principals and indications for the various therapeutic modalities such as photo-, biologic and laser therapies.

To be able to perform simple diagnostic and excisional biopsies independently.

To be able to review oncall and referral patients independently and formulate an adequate diagnosis and safe treatment plan.

To be prepared to sit for Part 2 of the Jordanian Dermatology Board Exam

To consolidate the principles of clinical research, evidence based medicine and continuing professional development. Trainees are encouraged to present during this period and are expected to have published or submitted clinical work for publication by the end of the training program.​
