An important breakthrough medical achievement has been accomplished by faculty members from the School of Medicine, with the participation of Professor Iyad Al-Amouri from the Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Qais Al-Balbis from the Department of Internal Medicine, and Professor Emeritus at the University of Jordan, Prof. Ziad Hijazi from the Department of Pediatrics. The specialized medical team at the University of Jordan Hospital performed the first-of-its-kind transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation (TPV) on a patient in her twenties on Thursday, July 3, 2025. The valve was implanted via catheterization on a patient suffering from severe pulmonary valve insufficiency. The medical team included Professor Iyad Al-Amouri, Senior Consultant Pediatric Cardiologist; Dr. Qais Al-Balbisi, Consultant Cardiologist and Interventional Cardiologist; and Professor Ziad Hijazi, Consultant Cardiologist and Congenital Anomalies and Honorary Professor at the University of Jordan from the United States. They were supported by a nursing and technical staff specializing in cardiac catheterization.
This procedure is considered one of the most advanced procedures in the treatment of congenital heart diseases and anomalies. A pulmonary valve was implanted using catheter technology, without the need for traditional surgery. This achievement confirms the advanced level reached by the University of Jordan Hospital and the medical staff from the University of Jordan's School of Medicine in providing complex specialized healthcare, within the highest international medical standards.
